This Is Where I Talk And You Listen

 What The Dead Know
Back to Full Blog

I find cemeteries utterly fascinating and have been known to wander them aimlessly and for hours on end, snapping a shot here and there. The headstones are curious things, I think. Full of history and beauty. I took a series of photographs not too long ago with a black & white disposable camera. I was hoping for a grainy, slightly "old movie" effect to the photos and that's exactly what I achieved.

I do believe that the residents in my small, rural town find me unbelievably quirky. I suppose that's not a bad thing, really. It rather amuses me.

Hi Cat....I just looked in your gallery and i love the picture of the dirt road. that is amazing. If you like cemetaries, you would go nuts around here. there are headstones going back to the 1600's. The amazing thing is that you can read almost every word on them even after 300 plus years. great pictures!!!

The part of the city I grew up in was surrounded by cemetaries. We used to love to hang out in there and read the old gravestones, it was so quiet and peaceful.

I am sooooooo with you on cemeteries - - wherever I travel, it's part of the mission to find the oldest and most decrepit burial ground to roam for hours. It's partly the mystery of it, trying to interpret the patterns on common death dates in a family or a community.

There's an excellent pioneer cemetery in Fort Collins, CO, called Bingham Hill; many of the graves were discovered via dowsing and are marked by simple sandstone chunks with initials carved in 'em.

Maybe the best cemetery I've ever visited was on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, and I literally stumbled into it - - markers from the 11th century, knight effigies, mausoleums, all in that incredible misty Scottish atmosphere! St. Columba's Island, I think?

Enjoyed the post!

Glad that everyone enjoyed the post and that I'm not the only one out there that enjoys a good hike amongst the stones.

I Love that! I am like you, I hang around cemetaries shooting pictures too, even at night sometimes.... old country graveyards are some of my favorite things to photograph.

I enjoy all the photography that you share.
