Excerpt from a dream:
In a semi-state of sleep, I hear her padding silently into the bedroom. Though I haven’t managed to open my eyes, I can feel hers watching me from beside the bed. Turning over and facing my personal demon, I can sense her face nearing mine. I feel her warm breath and our noses touch. I open my eyes and allow them to adjust to the darkness. Her own eyes glitter, knowingly. Reaching out, I cup her soft cheek in my hand and she shows me. She takes me there.
It’s strangely similar to viewing an old black and white 16 mm filmstrip. Grainy, The audio dragging at first and then suddenly kicking in a bit too quickly. In the distance, I see a hillside with a lone, dead tree guarding a valley of wheat below it. There’s a soft breeze, but oddly enough, the wheat is swaying in the opposite direction.
She’s there, standing on a deserted dirt road that runs alongside the field of wheat. Standing at the crossroads, to be exact. There’s a roadside sign nearby that reads: “Make A Decision.” A fly lights on her face, and burrows comfortably into the corner of one of her eyes. I can hear it although I’m quite a distance away. She contemplates which road to take and stands, waiting for me to follow. I hesitate and lift my face towards the sky, searching for what, I haven’t a clue. Perhaps a sign of sorts.
I decide upon a different road.
She’s now a lone black figure in the distance, distorted from the heat rising from the road.
I should have followed her.
